Description
The Planar 2 is a belt-driven turntable designed by Rega, supplied with its Nd3 cartridge fitted at the factory. It combines a high-gloss laminated acrylic plinth with a 10 mm polished glass platter, driven by a 24 V motor engineered to limit vibrations transmitted to the cartridge.
The RB220 tonearm, made of aluminium, runs on very low-friction bearings housed in a rigid, lightweight assembly, with a built-in anti-skating mechanism, an adjustable counterweight and a cueing lever. The supplied Nd3 cartridge uses an elliptical stylus fixed by 3 screws, an aluminium cantilever and an N55 neodymium magnet; it delivers a nominal output voltage of 5.5 mV for a recommended tracking force of 1.75 g and an input load impedance of 47 kOhms. The cartridge is mounted to the tonearm via a 3-point fixing system.
This turntable is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts who want a complete, ready-to-use setup, without having to choose and set up a separate cartridge, while still benefiting from a tonearm and platter designed to bring out the detail in recordings.

What to check before buying used
The drive belt should be checked: it stretches or cracks over time and directly affects speed stability. On the Nd3 cartridge, examine the condition of the elliptical stylus and aluminium cantilever, which are particularly vulnerable to knocks, as well as the alignment of the 3-point mounting on the RB220 tonearm. Also check the smoothness of the tonearm bearings and the proper functioning of the anti-skating mechanism and cueing lever.
