Description
The Planar 3 is a belt-driven turntable from Rega, designed for playing vinyl records with a high level of mechanical precision. It is offered bare or fitted with an Nd3 or Nd5 MM cartridge, depending on the desired entry level.
The RB220 tonearm features very low-friction bearings housed in a rigid, lightweight assembly, with an adjustable bias system to suit a wide range of cartridges. The armtube is made of aluminium and anti-skating is built in. The 10 mm thick polished glass platter, combined with the rigid laminated acrylic plinth, helps to limit unwanted vibrations. The 24 V motor was designed to generate little mechanical noise, contributing to a quiet background. Switching between 33 and 45 rpm speeds is done manually.
This turntable is aimed at listeners looking to acquire a serious vinyl source, capable of finely reproducing the content of a record collection, whether as an entry-level hi-fi source or to complement an installation already equipped with good upstream electronics.

What to check before buying used
On a Planar 3, the drive belt is worth checking: over time it can stretch or crack, which affects speed stability. Also check the condition of the fitted cartridge, particularly the elliptical stylus tip and the aluminium cantilever, which are sensitive to knocks. The RB220 tonearm settings (tracking force, anti-skating, alignment) should be checked after any handling, and the central bearing inspected for any play or unusual noise.
