Description
The Planar 6 RS is a belt-drive turntable from Rega, offered as a special edition based on the Planar 6 model. It carries over several technical elements from the higher-end Planar 8 while retaining the format and dust cover typical of the Rega range. The RB880 tonearm, usually reserved for the Planar 8, is fitted here at the factory and supplied already aligned with an Nd9 moving magnet cartridge.
The plinth is built around a Tancast 8 foam-core structure, covered with a high-pressure aluminium laminate with matching edge trim. This design aims for a platform that is both lightweight and rigid, intended to limit resonance and stabilise the tonearm-cartridge assembly. The 16 mm double-layer float glass platter completes this pursuit of mechanical stability. Drive comes from a hand-tuned 24 V synchronous motor, noted for its quiet operation, paired with a CNC-machined dual pulley and two Rega Reference EBLT belts, for more precise speed control than a single-belt drive.
The Neo MK2 power supply, supplied separately and connected to the turntable via a Mini DIN connector, delivers a 24 V AC voltage protected by a resettable fuse, with a stated power consumption of 7.2 W. Output connection is via RCA phono, compatible with the majority of phono stages on the market.
This model is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts who already own a Rega system or who are looking for a high-end turntable without investing directly in a Planar 8. What to check before buying used
As the RB880 tonearm is aligned at the factory, check that the geometric setup and tracking force have not been disturbed by reassembly or transport. The two Rega Reference EBLT belts stretch over time and warrant a visual check of their elasticity, as does the Nd9 cartridge, whose stylus wear affects playback quality. Also inspect the 16 mm glass platter for any chips on the edges and test the Neo MK2 power supply, whose resettable fuse protects the 24 V motor.
