Description
The Rega Solis is a stereo power amplifier, distinct from a preamplifier, intended to provide the current stage required to drive demanding speakers. It works alongside a separate preamplifier, such as the Rega Mercury or the Rega Aethos used in preamplifier mode, and therefore does not feature a built-in volume control or source selection.
Its design is based on dual mono operation, with two 330 VA low-noise toroidal transformers paired with 40,000 µF of capacitors per channel. This architecture, in which each channel has its own power supply, limits interaction between the two stereo channels and contributes to a cleaner signal. The discrete circuit is fully balanced throughout the signal path, with balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs. The unit delivers 168 W into 8 ohms and 305 W into 4 ohms per channel, with a total harmonic distortion of 0.015% at 1 kHz and a frequency response of 15 Hz to 30 kHz (-0.5 dB), with a gain of 33.3 dB.
This type of amplifier is aimed at users who already own a separate preamplifier and are looking for a power stage capable of driving current-hungry speakers, particularly in setups where isolation between low-voltage and high-power stages is sought to reduce background noise.

What to check before buying used
On this dual mono power stage, check that both channels deliver identical power output on the test bench, as an imbalance may indicate a tired filter capacitor or a failing toroidal transformer. Inspect the speaker terminals and the XLR/RCA inputs at the rear, whose contacts oxidise over time and can cause crackling or loss of level. Checking for the absence of hum at idle, with the source switched off at the amplifier, remains the best indicator of the power supply's condition.
