Description
The REL 212 SX is an amplified subwoofer designed to complement a stereo or multichannel setup by delivering extended and controlled bass. It succeeds the 212 model, a reference recognised by the specialist press, and retains its dual-driver architecture while incorporating several technical developments.
The class D NextGen5 amplification drives two active drivers and two passive drivers, each 30 cm in diameter. REL has added carbon fibre spars to the rear of each driver to stiffen the assembly while lightening its structure, contributing to faster and better-controlled bass. The subwoofer also incorporates the PerfectFilter, originally developed for the S series, designed to improve coupling with the main speakers. The cabinet has also been redesigned to be slimmer, taller and deeper, in order to optimise bass dispersion in the listening room.
Connectivity includes a stereo RCA low-level input, a mono RCA LFE input, an XLR LFE input, a Speakon high-level input, as well as a mono RCA LFE output, an XLR LFE output and a Speakon high-level output. Gain adjustment is separate for high-level, low-level and LFE, and a 0/180° phase selector allows the coupling with the rest of the system to be adjusted.
This subwoofer is aimed at enthusiasts wishing to reinforce a pair of high-end stereo speakers or complete a demanding home cinema setup, thanks to its versatile connection options in low-level, high-level or LFE.

What to check before buying used
Check that the active and passive 30 cm drivers show no tears in the suspension or signs of impact, and listen at moderate volume to detect any rubbing noise from the cone. Examine the cabinet (corners, veneer, base) for warping or signs of moisture linked to the weight and prolonged use on the floor. Test the NextGen5 amplification across the full gain range to rule out a crackling potentiometer, and make sure the Speakon, RCA and XLR connections are intact and securely fitted.
