Description
The Carbon Special Black Label is a mid-sized subwoofer from REL, designed to complement a stereo setup or integrate into a Line Array configuration. It is built around a 305 mm driver made entirely of carbon fibre, paired with a passive radiator of the same diameter and material, the whole being driven by a NextGen 5 Class D amplifier delivering 900 watts RMS.
The chosen configuration places the woofer on the front face and the passive radiator facing downwards, an arrangement that favours coupling with the floor while freeing the main driver to reproduce bass and infra-bass with authority. The frequency response extends down to 19 Hz at -6 dB, allowing it to cover the lowest registers of both music and soundtracks. In terms of connectivity, the subwoofer offers a Neutrik Speakon high-level input, a stereo RCA low-level input, an LFE input in mono RCA and XLR, as well as corresponding high-level and LFE outputs, making it easy to chain several units together.

What to check before buying used
The passive radiator facing downwards means the feet should be checked and no rubbing should occur during operation, as an impact during handling could deform the carbon fibre cone. The Speakon connectors and LFE inputs/outputs (RCA, XLR) warrant a check for cleanliness and mechanical firmness after years of repeated connections. It is also advisable to listen at high volume to detect any noise from the NextGen 5 amplifier or distortion revealing a worn component in the Class D stage.
