Description
The Classic 99 is a hi-fi subwoofer from REL, designed to complement a stereo or home cinema setup in a large listening room. It sits above the Classic 98 in the manufacturer's range, with a larger diameter driver and higher power output.
The subwoofer features a 305 mm downward-firing driver, paired with a long-throw butyl surround and a cellulose pulp cone with an inverted dust cap. The amplification relies on a Class D module delivering 450 watts RMS, allowing a frequency response down to 24 Hz (-6 dB) while retaining a degree of texture in the bass. The high-pass crossover frequency is adjustable between 30 and 120 Hz, with a 0-180° phase switch and gain adjustable over an 80 dB range, independently on the high-level, low-level and LFE inputs.
In terms of connectivity, the Classic 99 offers a mono low-level input via RCA, a stereo high-level input in Neutrik Speakon format, an LFE .1 input via RCA, as well as a dedicated input for an optional REL AirShip II wireless transmitter kit.
This subwoofer is aimed at hi-fi or home cinema enthusiasts with a spacious room, looking for deep and nuanced bass reinforcement capable of integrating with systems already fitted with demanding speakers.

What to check before buying used
The downward-firing driver and its butyl surround warrant a visual check for any sagging or tearing of the cellulose pulp cone. The Class D amplification module, built into the cabinet, should be tested at different gain levels to rule out any unwanted noise or intermittent cutting out. The proper operation of the phase and high-pass crossover switches should also be checked, along with the condition of the Speakon and RCA connectors.
