Description
The REL Planar PL1 is an ultra-slim active subwoofer, designed to integrate into a wall-mounted installation or to be positioned freely within a room. It complements a hi-fi system or home cinema setup by providing the low-frequency extension that main speakers cannot always deliver on their own.
Its design is built around two active long-throw 165 mm drivers, with FibreAlloy cones mounted on steel chassis. These are supported by a rear 250 mm passive radiator, also in FibreAlloy. This combination of active drivers and a passive unit allows the generation of bass sound pressure despite a cabinet volume limited by the slim format. The stated extension reaches -6 dB at 31 Hz, measured in-room, placing this subwoofer in the realm of deep bass rather than simple midbass reinforcement.
The steel chassis of the drive units and the passive unit contributes to the rigidity of the assembly, an important point for limiting unwanted cabinet resonances at high output.
This format is aimed at setups where space is limited or where the aesthetics of the installation take priority: living room, lounge, discreet wall-mounted installation. Its relative compactness, with dimensions of 522 x 492 x 144 mm and a weight of 18.9 kg, makes it a solution suited to wall mounting as well as floor placement, without requiring the footprint of a traditional larger-volume subwoofer.

What to check before buying used
Test the subwoofer at high volume to detect any suspension noise on both active drivers as well as on the 250 mm passive unit: a rattling or scraping sound indicates a deformed FibreAlloy cone or faulty centring. Also inspect the condition of the steel chassis and the finish of the slim cabinet, particularly on the edges and corners if the unit has been wall-mounted. Finally, check that the built-in electronics function correctly (automatic standby, level and crossover frequency adjustments) after an extended period of disuse.
