Description
The S/550 is an active subwoofer from REL, designed to complement a pair of stereo speakers or a home cinema system without disturbing the tonal balance of the whole. It is the entry-level model in the manufacturer's S series, positioned below the S/850 but inheriting several of its design choices in a more compact format.
The amplification is built around a NextGen3 Class D module delivering 550 W RMS, paired with a long-throw 250 mm driver with an aluminium chassis, front-mounted. The 300 mm passive radiator, positioned towards the bottom of the cabinet, completes the acoustic loading and contributes to the reproduction of the lowest frequencies, the subwoofer claiming a frequency response extending down to 20 Hz. The connectivity covers both high-level integrations, via a Speakon Neutrik input and output, and standard low-level connections, with a stereo RCA input, an LFE phono input and an LFE XLR input, as well as an LFE XLR output.
This subwoofer is aimed at users equipped with medium-sized speakers, for music as much as for home cinema, looking to extend the bass of their system without moving to a bulky or oversized model. Its connection versatility, between high-level and low-level inputs, allows it to be integrated into both a stereo hi-fi system and a home cinema AV receiver.

What to check before buying used
The 300 mm passive radiator, exposed on the lower part of the cabinet, is vulnerable to knocks during repeated handling: check for any cracks or play in its mounting. Also check that the Speakon connectors are properly secured, as repeated use in high-level configuration can loosen the locking mechanism over time. Finally, a test at gradually increasing volume will confirm that the Class D amplification module shows no hum or premature thermal cut-out.
