Description
The S850 sits at the top of REL's S series. It is an active subwoofer, that is to say a speaker dedicated to the lowest register, fitted with its own amplification. Its purpose is to extend the bandwidth of an existing speaker system further downwards, for both music listening and film soundtracks.
The stated power reaches 850 watts RMS, a reserve intended to reproduce the most violent impacts as well as the longest organ notes without compression. The frequency extension is given as 19 Hz: this enters a domain where physical sensation takes over from purely auditory perception, that of film infrabass or an orchestra's lowest fundamentals. This extension relies in particular on a 305 mm passive radiator with a flat carbon diaphragm mounted on an aluminium chassis, a device without its own motor that extends the work of the active driver and loads the bass without resorting to a port.
The chosen format, 488 x 410 x 540 mm for 42.5 kg, reflects this approach: a generous internal volume and a substantial mass that limit unwanted cabinet vibrations. This weight requires a stable location and a suitable floor support, as well as help with handling.
This model is aimed at those who already have a good-quality stereo or multichannel system and are looking to extend its bass register in a room of considerable volume. An optional Airship wireless transmitter kit is available for installations where running a cable from the amplifier to the subwoofer's location is impractical.

What to check before buying used
When buying second-hand, a few points deserve particular attention with this type of unit. The passive radiator's diaphragm and its suspension should be examined closely: any deformation, sign of detachment or abnormal play in the excursion has a direct effect on performance in the extreme bass. The amplification module is the other sensitive element, as a subwoofer is driven continuously at high power: a persistent hum, unexpected cutting out or repeated triggering of the protection circuit indicate tired electronics. Also check the condition of the input and output connectors, often handled during moves, as well as the feet and corners of the cabinet, which are easily damaged given the unit's 42.5 kg weight.
