Description
The REL T/7x is an active subwoofer designed to complement a pair of hi-fi speakers by adding a coherent bass extension. It stands out for its preferred connection method: high-level connection via the amplifier's speaker outputs, a historic approach at REL that allows the subwoofer to receive the signal without drawing power from it.
The T/7x features a 20 cm long-throw front-firing active driver, fitted with an inverted FibreAlloy aluminium dust cap and a steel chassis, paired with a 10-inch (254 mm) passive radiator located beneath the subwoofer. This combination of active driver and passive radiator aims for a balance between mass and speed of movement, for bass intended to be fast and detailed rather than full and loose. The Class A/B amplification delivers a power output of 200 watts RMS and allows a low-frequency extension down to -6 dB at 30 Hz. The connectivity includes a Neutrik Speakon high-level input as well as single RCA and RCA LFE low-level inputs, offering flexibility in integration depending on the electronics used.
The T/7x also offers optional compatibility with the wireless Arrow system, said to be uncompressed thanks to a dedicated integrated chip, allowing you to do away with a cable between the amplifier and the subwoofer for installations where running high-level cable is impractical.
This subwoofer is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts seeking a discreet bass complement that integrates well with an existing pair of speakers, rather than a heavy-duty reinforcement for home cinema. What to check before buying used
The active driver and its FibreAlloy cap should be free from any dents or misalignment, which would indicate impact damage or use at excessive power levels. Also check the condition of the passive radiator located beneath the subwoofer, which is more exposed to knocks during floor handling, as well as ensuring there is no play or unwanted noise in its suspension. Check that the Neutrik Speakon connector, used every time a high-level connection is made, is properly secured and free from corrosion, and test the Arrow Wireless module if possible when the unit is fitted with one.
