Description
The Atalante 5 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker from Revival Audio, a French manufacturer. It consists of a soft dome tweeter, a midrange driver and a large-diameter woofer, arranged in a three-way architecture designed to cover the entire audible spectrum, from bass to treble.
The 28 mm soft dome tweeter incorporates Revival Audio's patented ARID (Anti Reflection Inner Dome) technology, combined with a large rear chamber and a low resonance frequency of 520 Hz: this design limits internal reflections behind the dome, resulting in cleaner, less coloured treble. The 75 mm soft dome midrange uses an evolved version of this technology, ARID+. Bass is handled by a 12-inch (30 cm) driver with BSC (Basalt Sandwich Construction), a process seeking a compromise between rigidity and lightness of the diaphragm for responsive, controlled bass.
The frequency response extends from 28 Hz to 22 kHz (±3 dB), with a sensitivity of 89 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms (minimum of 3.2 ohms at 110 Hz). The crossover frequencies between drivers are set at 450 Hz and 3.5 kHz. Power handling reaches 200 watts, with recommended operation from 30-50 watts, leaving a comfortable margin for many amplification setups.
This floorstanding speaker is aimed at a listener wanting a large-format speaker capable of filling a medium to large listening room, for music as well as demanding stereo home cinema use. What to check before buying used
The driver suspensions deserve close inspection: the surround of the 12-inch woofer can stiffen or crack with age, affecting bass performance. Also check the condition of the tweeter and midrange domes, which are exposed to accidental dents, as well as for any play or misalignment at the mounting points. Finally, the cabinet should be examined: finish chips, veneer lifting or signs of damp on this 33 kg unit may indicate unsuitable storage.
