The Rose RS250A is a network player designed to serve as a central source for an audio system. It combines a network streaming function, an integrated digital-to-analogue conversion stage and a touchscreen interface, with the aim of replacing several dedicated sources with a single connected device.
Its digital-to-analogue conversion relies on an ESS ES9038 Pro DAC, a chip from ESS Technology recognised for its reproduction precision. Paired with a maximum unbalanced output level of 2.2 Vrms, a harmonic distortion rate of 0.00028% and a signal-to-noise ratio of 122 dB, this conversion stage aims for a clean and detailed rendering, with a stated dynamic range of 135 dB and stereo crosstalk better than -137 dB. Frequency response extends from 17 Hz to 80 kHz (+/-1 dB), for an output impedance of 150 ohms.
The device runs on Rose OS, a system based on a customised version of Android 7.1, supported by a hexa-core processor and 4 GB of LPDDR3 memory. This architecture manages the colour touchscreen, the built-in streaming platforms and the playback of high-resolution files, up to PCM 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD512.

What to check before buying used
On this type of network player, the touchscreen and its panel are worth checking (scratches, ghost pressure points, even backlighting), as are the USB-DAC port and analogue outputs, since the ESS9038PRO conversion stage is sensitive to connector wear. The Wi-Fi connection and network module should be tested under real conditions, as a reception fault or a failing card can compromise streaming. Also check that Rose OS starts up normally and that firmware updates remain accessible, as some older units may be stuck on an outdated version.
