Description
The Rose RS451 is a network player combining a streamer, DAC and headphone amplifier within a single chassis. It features a dual ESS SABRE ES9027PRO converter, one dedicated to the preamp output, the other to the headphone output, an architecture designed to separate the stages and limit interference between circuits.
The ES9027PRO chip is a 32-bit 8-channel DAC based on the HyperStream architecture, capable of decoding PCM up to 768 kHz and native DSD512. The unit features a high-precision femto clock designed to reduce jitter, and delivers high measurements: a signal-to-noise ratio of 129 dB balanced, a total harmonic distortion of 0.00025% and a maximum stereo crosstalk of -143 dB. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 80 kHz. On the headphone output side, four independently driven amplifiers deliver up to 2700 mW into 16 Ω, 1300 mW into 300 Ω and 350 mW into 600 Ω, enough to power dynamic headphones as well as high-impedance planar models, up to 600 Ω.
The unit offers three separate headphone outputs: 6.35 mm unbalanced jack, XLR and 4.4 mm balanced, allowing different headphones to be connected without an adapter. It features an 8.8-inch Full HD IPS touchscreen LCD driven by Rose OS, an interface based on customised Android 7.1, with 8 GB of LPDDR3 memory. Connectivity covers Bluetooth 5.4 aptX, AirPlay, DLNA and Roon Ready certification, as well as access to streaming services such as Qobuz, TIDAL or Spotify Connect. An HDMI output also allows 4K 60p video playback.
This type of unit is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts wishing to centralise network streaming, digital-to-analogue conversion and high-end headphone amplification in a single unit, without multiplying separate components. It will particularly suit those who own demanding headphones, notably planar or high-impedance models, and who are looking for direct touchscreen control rather than operation via a smartphone or tablet.

What to check before buying used
Before purchasing a used unit, it is also advisable to check the stability of the network and Bluetooth connection, as well as the absence of noise or distortion across all four independent headphone amplifiers, a sensitive point on this type of multi-amp architecture.
