Description
The R1 MK4 is a portable radio from Ruark, successor to a model launched in 2006 and recognised for its vintage aesthetic. It features FM and DAB/DAB+ reception, as well as a Bluetooth connection allowing music to be streamed from a smartphone or a streaming service.
The unit houses a built-in 9 watt Class AB amplifier, paired with a 75 mm speaker covering a frequency response of 55 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The backlit OLED screen displays information legibly from any angle, with brightness that adjusts automatically to ambient lighting. Menu navigation, source selection and volume control are handled via a single rotary control, the RotoDial. At the rear, there is a 3.5 mm jack input, a headphone output, and a USB-C port allowing a smartphone to be charged or audio files to be played from a memory stick.
Usable as a clock radio, the R1 MK4 offers two independent alarms, adjustable by day, sound source, volume and duration. An internal battery keeps the time and alarm settings for several weeks, even in the event of a power cut.
This model is intended primarily for stationary use in a bedroom or office, but can also become portable with the optional addition of a BackPack battery, for users looking for a radio with a distinctive design that is simple to operate day to day.

What to check before buying used
On this model with an OLED screen and built-in amplifier, check that the display remains sharp and free of burn marks, a sign of heavy use. Test the RotoDial control: it should turn smoothly and respond correctly when changing source and volume. Also check the USB-C port and the jack input, as well as the proper functioning of the internal battery that keeps the time and alarms during a power cut.
