Ruark's R1S continues the brand's line of small radios while adding full connectivity. Beyond FM reception on the 87.5 - 108 MHz band and DAB/DAB+, the unit accesses internet radio and the streaming services Spotify Connect, Deezer and Amazon Music. Bluetooth 5.0 allows sound to be sent directly from a phone or tablet. The result is closer to a small standalone music system than a simple radio set.
The audio section relies on 18 watts of amplification running in class AB, a design favoured for its linearity, distributed across two 75 mm speakers. The stated response of 55 Hz to 20 kHz places the bass limit well below what sets of this size typically produce, allowing for music listening rather than just speech. The wireless link uses the SBC, AAC, BLE and A2DP codecs, with AAC being particularly useful for iOS sources. Control can be handled either from the LCD screen, which displays the time, alarm and programme information, or from the UNDOK app available on iOS and Android.
Measuring 340 x 185 x 150 mm and weighing 2.9 kg, the R1S sits easily on a bedside table, kitchen worktop, desk shelf or bookcase. It is aimed at the listener who listens to the radio and music throughout the day in a given room, without wanting to set up a full system, and who wants to switch from a broadcast station to a web radio or a playlist from their phone. The Battery Pack option also opens up portable use from room to room.

What to check before buying used
With this type of connected set, start by checking that the unit still accepts firmware updates and connects to the Wi-Fi network as well as to the UNDOK app: this determines long-term access to web radios and streaming services. Listen to both 75 mm speakers at medium then high volume to detect any hiss or distortion, and turn the rotary controller in both directions, as these dials wear over the years. Finally, check the condition of the LCD screen, the retention of time and alarm settings after a mains power cut, and the charge-holding performance of the battery pack if one is included, as this type of battery loses capacity over time.
