Description
The Sabre-R is a pair of compact bookshelf-type speakers, designed by Ruark using a 2-way bass-reflex architecture. They were developed with aesthetic consistency alongside the brand's R610 console, with which they share the walnut and satin anthracite finishes as well as a section of wooden grille used on their front panel.
The top of the spectrum is handled by a 26 mm silk dome tweeter fitted with a neodymium motor, while the midrange and bass frequencies are handled by a 150 mm driver with a treated natural fibre cone, featuring a 4-layer 30 mm voice coil and a long-throw motor. The crossover frequency is 2.2 kHz. The frequency response spans 50 Hz to 20 kHz (± 3 dB), with a sensitivity of 86 dB and an impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 4.2 ohms). The reinforced and damped MDF cabinet incorporates a rear bass-reflex port, allowing a degree of flexibility in room placement. Connection is made via gold-plated terminals, in single- or bi-wiring configuration depending on the setup chosen.
Compatible with amplification of 25 to 100 W, these speakers are suited to a compact stereo installation, on a shelf or on stands, for a system where aesthetics and visual consistency with a Ruark source matter as much as sound reproduction.

What to check before buying used
On bass-reflex speakers of this age, the suspension of the midrange/bass driver is worth a visual check: the foam or rubber can stiffen or crack over time, which affects bass performance. It is also worth listening to the silk dome tweeter at moderate volume to detect any crackling or loss of definition in the treble, a sign of a worn voice coil. Checking the gold-plated terminals and their tightness ensures a reliable connection with the original or replacement cabling.
