Description
The Sonos Ace is an over-ear headphone that can connect via Bluetooth, USB-C or a supplied 3.5 mm mini-jack cable. It features active noise cancellation as well as an Aware mode allowing ambient sounds through, and can also be paired with a Sonos soundbar to deliver home cinema audio directly through the headphones.
The headphones support Dolby Atmos with dynamic head-tracking, allowing sound effects to be perceived as coming from different directions depending on the listener's head orientation. It plays lossless audio over both Bluetooth and USB-C, reproducing the nuances of tracks without additional compression. Eight built-in microphones handle both active noise cancellation and voice pickup during calls using beamforming technology. The dynamic drivers measure 40 mm in diameter, and Bluetooth 5.4 supports SBC, AAC and aptX HD codecs. Claimed battery life reaches 30 hours of listening with active noise cancellation enabled, and 24 hours on phone calls. Equalisation can be adjusted from the Sonos mobile app.
The stainless steel headband and memory foam ear cushions covered in vegan leather aim for extended comfort, with acoustic isolation provided by the internal mechanism of the ear cups.

What to check before buying used
The memory foam ear cushions and the vegan leather covering them deserve particular attention: their suppleness and seal condition both comfort and the effectiveness of passive acoustic isolation. Also check the condition of the stainless steel headband, which should retain its flexibility without excessive play or creaking. As with any Bluetooth headphones, actual battery life should be tested: a noticeable drop compared to the claimed 30 hours with active noise cancellation may indicate cell ageing. Finally, test the actual operation of active noise cancellation and Aware mode, as well as the Bluetooth connection and the USB-C port.
