Description
Sonos Outdoor is a pair of passive speakers intended for outdoor installation, on a terrace, balcony or in a garden. Unlike the brand's standalone speakers, this model does not have built-in amplification: it must be connected to an amplifier, in particular the Sonos Amp, to function and benefit from the Sonos multiroom ecosystem.
Each speaker combines a 2.54 cm fabric dome tweeter with a 16.5 cm midrange/woofer driver, for a claimed frequency response of 55 Hz to 20 kHz. The impedance of 8 ohms and the sensitivity of 89 dB allow use with a conventional amplifier, while the power handling of 130 watts allows listening at sustained volume outdoors, where sound disperses more than indoors.
The 180°-adjustable mounting bracket, fitted with an integrated cable channel, makes it easy to position on a wall or façade and allows the sound to be directed towards the desired listening area, an important point for an outdoor installation where the layout of the space varies considerably from one use to another.
These speakers are aimed at those who already own, or are considering acquiring, a Sonos Amp and wish to extend their multiroom listening outdoors. They are suited to a semi-permanent installation, fixed durably to a wall or structure, rather than occasional portable use.
Their design is intended to withstand humidity, water, salt spray, heat, UV rays and frost, which makes them suitable for remaining in place all year round without special protection.

What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the 16.5 cm drivers do not cope well with prolonged exposure to the elements: check that they show no cracking or hardening, signs of accelerated ageing typical of outdoor use. Also examine the adjustable mounting bracket and its integrated cable channel, whose mechanism can seize up or work loose after several seasons outdoors. Finally, inspect the grille and cabinet housing for any signs of water ingress or corrosion at the connections.
