Description
The Gravis II is an active subwoofer from Sonus faber, one of the two smallest models in the Gravis collection launched by the Italian brand. It is a subwoofer designed to integrate into an existing audio or audio/video system, with particular attention paid to its compactness and its ability to blend into a domestic environment.
The subwoofer relies on a passive sealed enclosure design, combining a 26 cm long-throw driver facing downwards with a passive radiator of the same diameter facing forwards. Both elements feature a treated paper cone and a wide rubber suspension. The high-linearity Class AB amplification delivers a nominal power of 350 W and a peak power of 700 W, for a stated frequency response of 18 Hz up to a high-end range of between 40 and 150 Hz depending on the setting. Automatic calibration and continuously adjustable signal phase, from 0° to 360°, allow the subwoofer's integration to be adjusted to the room and the rest of the system.
Connectivity comprises a mono RCA LFE input, a mono RCA Line input and a 4-pole Neutrik Speakon high-level input, allowing connection to either a home cinema amplifier or a stereo system driven at high level. A wireless transmitter is available as an option to do away with cabling to the amplifier.

What to check before buying used
The 26 cm driver and passive radiator, facing downwards and forwards respectively, warrant a careful inspection of their rubber suspension, which is prone to cracking and losing flexibility with age. Listening to the subwoofer at both low and high volume helps detect any voice coil rubbing or abnormal distortion on bass frequencies. It is also worth checking that the continuous phase control and automatic calibration function correctly, as well as the condition of the RCA and Neutrik Speakon connectors, which can sometimes be oxidised or worn on a unit that has already been in use.
