Description
The Performer S1200 is a class AB stereo power amplifier designed by SPL. It is placed downstream of a preamplifier to deliver the power required to drive the speakers, without an integrated preamplification stage.
Its design separates the voltage and power amplification stages, an architecture that guarantees stable operation of the class AB circuit. Each stage has its own negative feedback path, which prevents any interaction between the speaker feedback and the input stage: this isolation allows SPL's VOLTAiR technology to be fully expressed. The power supply relies on a 1440 VA shielded toroidal transformer combined with an internal linear power supply, ensuring stability under heavy load. Two protection circuits continuously monitor the unit: one cuts the output stage in the event of detected DC voltage, the other activates a thermal sensor on the heatsinks which disables the output and speeds up the fans in case of overheating, until the unit has fully cooled down.
The balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, selectable via a rear-panel switch, make the Performer S1200 compatible with almost all preamplifiers on the market without an adapter. The speaker outputs accept both screw-type 4 mm cables and banana plugs.
This type of amplifier is aimed at demanding hi-fi systems seeking a dedicated stereo power source, paired with a separate preamplifier, to drive speakers requiring a power reserve and rigorous signal control.

What to check before buying used
The thermal and anti-DC protection circuits are worth testing at start-up: the TEMP LED should remain off during normal use, and the Protect LED should only activate in the event of a genuine fault. Also check that the fans, which engage when temperature rises, are working correctly, as well as the condition of the speaker terminals (threading of the 4 mm holes, banana plugs) after years of repeated connections. As the toroidal transformer is a heavy component sensitive to shocks during transport, a check for silent operation with no load is recommended.
