Description
The Stax SR-009S is a premium open-back electrostatic headphone, an evolution of the original SR-009. It is a high-fidelity headphone designed for analytical, detailed listening, requiring a dedicated electrostatic amplifier to operate.
The headphone is fitted with a MLER 2 multilayer fixed electrode, featuring gold plating intended to reduce resonance. The main body, in aluminium, has been redesigned to further limit resonance and provide a more consistent sound. The earcup design has also been modified compared with the previous model.
This type of headphone is aimed at an experienced user, already owning an electrostatic system or prepared to invest in a compatible amplifier. It is suited to seated listening at home, in a quiet environment, rather than portable or mobile use, as electrostatic technology requires a specific wired connection.
What to check before buying used
Check the integrity of the dedicated five-pin electrostatic cable and its sheath, as any looseness or repeated kinking can cause micro-dropouts in the high-voltage signal. Examine the MLER 2 fixed electrode and the protective grille through the earcup: any sign of impact or oxidation on the gold plating can alter the frequency response. Also inspect the earpad foams and the aluminium headband, whose wear or compression affects fit and acoustic seal.
