What to check before buying used
The 6DJ8 valves in the gain stage wear and become microphonic over time: a check of their condition (noise, hum, matching) is advisable, and while replacement remains possible, it must remain faithful to the original valve to preserve the sonic colouration. On the transistorised side, the capacitors in the power stage are worth checking, as is the volume potentiometer, which can become crackly after several years of use.
