Description
The DAC 8 DSD is a high-end digital-to-analogue converter from T+A, designed to reproduce all forms of digital sources, including DSD, up to its highest available resolution. It is not limited to conversion alone: its output stage and analogue volume control also make it a fully-fledged preamplifier, capable of driving active speakers or an external power amplifier directly.
The unit features a fully analogue-built volume control, based on High-End Melf-type resistors. This circuit is designed to preserve signal dynamics even at low listening levels, a sensitive point for conventional volume controls. Two gold-plated relay contacts also allow this circuit to be removed entirely from the signal path when not in use, reverting to pure conversion.
The output stage, described by the manufacturer as a "State of the Art" design, is fully balanced and of discrete construction, with a very low output impedance. The DAC 8 DSD offers balanced outputs in XLR format and unbalanced outputs in RCA format, providing broad compatibility with preamplifiers, power amplifiers or active speakers on the market. Two separate mains power supplies, one for the analogue section and one for the digital section, are intended to limit interference between the two domains.
A high-current headphone amplifier completes the unit, designed to drive demanding headphones without any additional external stage.
This DAC is aimed at high-end hi-fi systems where the digital source plays a central role, whether feeding active speakers, a separate power amplifier, or for headphone listening. Its analogue preamplification function makes it a central component capable of simplifying a system while maintaining a high standard of sound quality.
What to check before buying used
The analogue volume control relies on gold-plated relay contacts that should switch without crackling or cutting out when adjusted: testing at various levels allows this to be checked. The balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs are worth checking separately, as a contact fault may affect only one channel or one type of output. An inspection of the discrete output stage and all connectors after several years of use is recommended before any extended period of use.
