Description
The PA 3100 HV is a stereo integrated amplifier from T+A, designed as an evolution of the PA 3000 HV, from which it inherits most of its sub-assemblies. It is a complete unit intended to directly power a pair of speakers, without requiring a separate power amplifier.
The most visible difference from the model it derives from lies in the presence of two VU meters on the front panel, which display in real time the power delivered per channel, expressed in Watts under 4 Ohms and on a logarithmic scale. The preamplifier stage has also been revised, with direct current (DC) coupling, which has allowed a further gain in sound quality. The analogue mains power supply unit and the voltage regulation section have likewise been redesigned, on a basis close to that used on the A 3000 HV.
This power supply design makes it possible to connect an additional mains power unit, the PS 3000 HV, which provides 1800 Watts of extra supply power. The aim is to reinforce the stability and overall performance of the power supply system, in order to effortlessly control speakers considered difficult to drive and allow them to deliver their full sound quality.
The PA 3100 HV can also be fitted, as an option, with high-performance phono preamplifier modules, with different circuit topologies depending on whether they are intended for an MM or MC cartridge. It is also possible to install the analogue signal processing module developed for the P 3000 HV, which adds tone and loudness functions separated by channel. An all-metal infrared remote control, the F3001, is supplied as standard with the unit.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a user keen to have an upgradable system, capable of eventually incorporating an additional power supply unit or phono modules suited to their vinyl source. It will be particularly suitable for a system paired with current-demanding speakers, where the power headroom and the stability of the power supply make a noticeable difference to the listening experience.
What to check before buying used
The needle VU meters deserve a check of their lighting and mechanism, as a display fault could indicate a wider electronic issue. The DC coupling of the preamplifier stage, which is more demanding in terms of component drift, warrants a careful check for the absence of hum or distortion when powering up. Also check the condition of the connectors dedicated to connecting the PS 3000 HV mains power unit, as well as the proper functioning of the internal voltage regulation.
