What to check before buying used
The optical block remains the sensitive point: favour a unit whose tray opens and closes without hesitation or abnormal noise, and check that playback of both SACDs and CD-R/RW discs runs without skipping or errors, including near the end of the disc. A laser calibration fault often shows up as intermittent playback refusals rather than a total failure, which may go unnoticed during a quick test. Also check the coaxial and optical digital outputs if the unit is to be used as a transport into an external DAC.
