Description
The TR 450 is a bookshelf speaker from T+A, designed as the compact variant of the TR 450 (TR 400 in its larger version). It uses the same drivers and a very similar crossover, in a cabinet of reduced dimensions that naturally suits it to shelf-mounted installation rather than on a dedicated stand.
The more compact cabinet of the TR 450 slightly alters the reproduction of low frequencies: the bass extension sits a little higher than on the TR 400. This trade-off is not a drawback when placed on a shelf, however, as this type of installation tends to naturally reinforce bass reproduction. Beyond this nuance, the sonic qualities of the TR 450 match those of the TR 400, both models sharing the same signature.
The speaker is fitted with gold-plated stereo speaker terminals, a finishing detail that reflects the care given to the connections.
The TR 450 is intended for a listener wishing to enjoy the sonic qualities of the TR range in a reduced footprint, typically for a shelf or cabinet installation, in a living room or space where the bookshelf format is preferred over a standmounted speaker.
What to check before buying used
The driver suspensions deserve close inspection: on this compact format, a hardened or split foam or surround directly affects the bass response, already limited by the small cabinet volume. Also check the condition of the cabinet finish and corners, as well as the cleanliness of the gold-plated terminals, which can sometimes be oxidised or loose on older units. A listening test on both channels helps to identify any crossover imbalance between the two speakers.
