Description
The Criterion TS 350 is a 2.5-way floorstanding speaker from T+A, a German manufacturer renowned for its expertise in electroacoustics. It relies on a transmission line loading, an internal architecture more complex than a simple bass-reflex, designed to make the best use of the air movement generated by the bass drivers.
The floorstander features two 170 mm drivers with GREYCONE cones: one is dedicated to pure bass, the other handles the bass-midrange duties. The top of the spectrum is entrusted to a ring radiator tweeter, a technology T+A uses across the whole of its TL range. The long, fully developed transmission line aims for extended bass, whilst sealed damping slots limit partial oscillations and unwanted cabinet resonances.
This type of loading, more demanding to design and manufacture than a conventional bass-reflex, is aimed at listeners seeking deep, natural bass rather than artificially accentuated bass. The TS 350 fits well into a hi-fi system where tonal coherence and low-frequency reproduction without excessive coloration are the priority.

What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the two GREYCONE drivers deserve close inspection: sagging or hardening of the surround alters the bass response that the transmission line is meant to enhance. Also check the ring radiator tweeter, whose metal dome may show deformation or misalignment following an impact. Finally, inspect the cabinet and the sealed damping slots: a split seal or a loosened panel encourages the unwanted resonances that this architecture is specifically designed to eliminate.
