Description
The CD III is a compact disc player from the Danish brand Tangent, designed to occupy a small footprint in a hi-fi system while handling playback of a user's CD collection. It positions itself as a simple digital source, intended to work alongside an amplifier or an external DAC thanks to its analogue and digital outputs.
The SC6135B digital-to-analogue converter processes 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo streams, the native format of audio CDs. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, covering the full audible spectrum, and a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dBA ensures clean playback with no perceptible hiss in normal use. Gapless playback allows tracks to run into one another without interruption, particularly useful for albums conceived as a continuous whole or live recordings where songs follow on without silence.
In terms of connectivity, the player offers a stereo RCA analogue output for direct connection to an amplifier, as well as an optical Toslink digital output allowing the use of a higher-quality external converter or DAC should the user wish to refine the sound. A remote control is supplied for operation from a distance, and a display screen makes it easier to navigate between tracks.

What to check before buying used
The optical drive remains the weak point of the CD III after many years of use: favour a unit whose tray opens and closes smoothly, and check that playback starts quickly without repeated errors or freezing on certain discs. The Toslink output is worth testing with the optical cable actually intended for use, as a faulty connection here can cut the digital stream. A slight mechanical noise when loading a disc is normal, but clicking sounds or increasing slowness indicate wear in the mechanism.
