Description
The Tangent PreAmp II is a compact stereo preamplifier designed to centralise several audio sources ahead of a power amplifier stage. It accepts an RCA input configurable as line or phono, an optical S/PDIF input and Bluetooth, allowing it to be paired with a turntable as well as a digital source or mobile device.
Its conversion stage is built around a 24-bit / 192 kHz Cirrus Logic DAC, paired with a front-panel volume potentiometer and a J-Fet transistor output stage. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 50 kHz, for a wide sound spectrum, and the signal-to-noise ratio reaches 112 dBA, ensuring a quiet background. A tone control of plus or minus 8 dB allows the timbre to be adjusted according to the system.
On the output side, the unit offers a balanced XLR output, an unbalanced RCA output and a dedicated subwoofer output for adding a subwoofer, as well as a front-panel headphone output for listening on headphones. The Qualcomm Bluetooth controller makes wireless streaming easy from a smartphone, tablet or computer.
This preamplifier is aimed at those seeking a compact, versatile stereo pre-stage capable of combining analogue and digital sources within a modestly sized hi-fi system.

What to check before buying used
The front-panel volume potentiometer is the most heavily used part on this type of preamplifier: testing it at mid-travel and at the end of travel allows any crackling or dead spot to be detected. Also check that the tone control and headphone output work properly, as well as Bluetooth pairing, to rule out any contact faults on these controls.
