Description
The Cheviot Legacy is a floorstanding speaker from Tannoy, built around a 12-inch Dual Concentric coaxial driver. This principle places the tweeter at the centre of the bass woofer, so that both transducers emit from a single point of origin.
The 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter uses a low-mass voice coil, allowing it to cover high frequencies with precision up to 30 kHz. The 12-inch polypropylene cone woofer relies on a neodymium magnet motor and extends down to 38 Hz, providing a present bass foundation without lacking dynamics. With a sensitivity of 91 dB/W/m and an impedance of 8 ohms, the speaker accepts a power range of 20 to 250 watts, giving it a comfortable margin with amplifiers of varying power.
The point source achieved by the coaxial configuration limits the dispersion of the different frequency bands within the listening space, promoting a stable sound image even off the strict listening axis. This behaviour is particularly well suited to rooms where the listening position is not perfectly centred.
With its floorstanding format and dimensions of 66 x 27 x 35 cm for a weight of 35 kg, the Cheviot Legacy is aimed at living room hi-fi setups seeking coherent listening across wide volume ranges, without the need for a separate subwoofer.

What to check before buying used
With this type of coaxial driver, check the condition of the aluminium tweeter dome, which is sensitive to knocks and deformation that can affect treble reproduction. Also check the polypropylene woofer suspension, which can stiffen or crack over time and affect bass performance. A difference in sound between the two speakers of a pair may indicate uneven wear of these components.
