Tannoy Precision 6.1
Tannoy bookshelf speaker with a 15 cm Dual Concentric coaxial driver and WideBand titanium tweeter, for coherent listening at modest volume.
Description
The Precision 6.1 is a bookshelf speaker from Tannoy, built around the Dual Concentric driver that has made the brand's reputation. The principle involves housing the tweeter at the exact centre of the woofer, so that both sound sources emit from a single point in space rather than from two separate locations on the front baffle.
The driver measures 15 cm in diameter, with a paper pulp woofer cone and, at its centre, a 25 mm WideBand titanium dome tweeter capable of reaching up to 35 kHz. The crossover point between the two ways is set at 1.6 kHz. The cabinet features curved side panels, a shape that limits the occurrence of standing waves within the enclosure and contributes to a cleaner reproduction. Sensitivity stands at 88 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) for a nominal impedance of 8 Ω, while power handling reaches 75 W RMS (300 W peak), with recommended amplifiers between 20 and 150 W.
This compact bookshelf format, with dimensions of 224 × 330 × 257 mm and a weight of 7.3 kg, suits a small to medium-sized hi-fi system, in an office or living room, for a listener seeking a precise, centred sound image rather than high sound pressure. The point-source design of the Dual Concentric driver favours a tonal coherence that is particularly appreciated when listening at close range.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth examining the condition of the paper woofer cone, which is prone to deformation, damp stains or tears along the fabric edge. The titanium tweeter dome, located at the centre of the driver, should be free of any signs of impact or denting, a fault that would directly affect treble dispersion given its coaxial position. It is also worth checking that the protective grille has not been lost and that the rear connection terminals have not been forced or corroded.
