Description
The Turnberry GR is a two-way floorstanding speaker from Tannoy, part of the British manufacturer's Prestige series. It relies on the principle of the Dual Concentric driver, a coaxial design in which the bass and treble share the same acoustic point of origin, rather than being separated within the speaker's cabinet.
The 25 cm Dual Concentric driver pairs a treated paper-pulp woofer cone with a 33 mm aluminium alloy dome tweeter placed at its centre. This coaxial arrangement aims for temporal coherence and a point-source sound image, where bass and treble frequencies appear to originate from a single location rather than from two separate transducers.
The 93 dB sensitivity (2.83 V / 1 m) and nominal impedance of 8 ohms make this floorstanding speaker easy to drive, even with a modest power amplifier. The frequency response extends from 34 Hz to 25 kHz at −6 dB, and the speaker accepts up to 110 W RMS continuously, with a possible peak of 400 W. The recommended amplifier power lies between 30 and 180 W, allowing for either a low-power valve amplifier or a more powerful transistor amplifier.

What to check before buying used
With this type of speaker, the cabinet warrants close inspection: veneer, corners and rear ports must show no chips or signs of moisture that could affect the internal volume. The coaxial Dual Concentric driver should be checked by ear across the whole range, bass and treble alike, listening for any unwanted noise, rubbing or distortion that would indicate a tired suspension or a damaged dome. An imbalance between the two speakers often points to uneven ageing of the suspensions, while the protective grilles and rear connection terminals must remain intact and firmly fastened.
