The top plate deserves close inspection: look for any chips or traces of glue indicating coupling spikes that have been removed or poorly fitted. Check that the column has not been filled with sand or other weighting material left in place, which would considerably increase the parcel weight and can mask a stability fault. Also check the base plate: deep scratches, oxidation or missing screws weaken the stand's footing and uprightness.
