Description

The TEAC AI-501DA combines an integrated amplifier and a digital-to-analogue converter within a single chassis, designed to accept digital sources directly without the need for an external DAC. It is aimed at those wishing to simplify their system while retaining qualitative control over signal conversion.

Amplification is based on an ABLETEC ALC0180 Class D module, a pulse-width modulation technology that delivers a stated power of approximately 2 × 60 W into 4 Ω while limiting heat build-up and power consumption compared with conventional analogue amplification of comparable power. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a Burr-Brown PCM5102 DAC operating at 32-bit resolution, a component recognised for its accuracy of reproduction. The unit accepts three digital inputs, USB, optical and coaxial, capable of handling streams up to 192 kHz, as well as playback of DSD files at 2.8 and 5.6 MHz via the USB input. In terms of power consumption, the unit stands out for its notable efficiency: 10 W at idle and just 0.2 W in standby.

This model suits a compact system built primarily around digital sources: network player, computer connected via USB, tuner or CD player connected via coaxial or optical link. Its low power consumption also makes it a sensible choice for prolonged daily use, without any notable energy cost while on standby.

What to check before buying used

The ABLETEC ALC0180 Class D module is generally reliable, but it is worth checking for background noise, hum or unexpected cut-outs when powering up. The digital inputs (USB, optical, coaxial) should be tested individually, including at high resolution and with DSD, as a worn USB or optical connector can cause dropouts. The front-panel potentiometers and selectors should also be checked for crackling when operated, which would indicate that cleaning is required.
