Description
The TEAC AP 701 is a stereo power amplifier designed to complement a preamplifier or a source fitted with a line-level output. It is built on a dual-mono architecture, meaning each channel has its own complete circuit, from input to output, with no components shared between the left and right channels.
This design relies on two separate toroidal transformers and two Hypex Ncore amplification modules developed specifically for TEAC. The Ncore module combines high efficiency with low distortion: TEAC states a THD of 1% at both 4 Ω and 8 Ω, with an output power of 230 W + 230 W at 4 Ω (260 W + 260 W dynamic) and 125 W + 125 W at 8 Ω (170 W + 170 W dynamic). The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 110 dB and the frequency response spans from 10 Hz to 50,000 Hz, for a speaker impedance of between 4 and 8 Ω.
The unit is also notable for its lack of a fan: heat dissipation relies on the amplification modules being fixed directly to the bottom panel and on finned side panels, positioned according to the internal airflow. The chassis measures 44.4 cm wide, 34.8 cm deep and 11.1 cm high, for a weight of 9.9 kg.
In terms of connectivity, the AP 701 offers an RCA input and an XLR input, as well as a 12-volt trigger input and output for integration into an automatically controlled system.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a user wishing to pair dedicated power electronics with an existing preamplifier, in a demanding stereo system where channel separation and current stability are sought, particularly with speakers of low or variable impedance.

What to check before buying used
On this type of fanless power amplifier, it is best to check that the left and right channels deliver symmetrical power, as any imbalance may indicate a worn Ncore module or a toroidal transformer nearing the end of its life. The RCA and XLR connectors and the 12V trigger sockets should be tested to rule out any loose contacts. It is also advisable to check for the absence of hiss or distortion at high volume, as well as the fixing of the side heatsink panels.
