Description
The AX-505 is a stereo integrated amplifier designed by TEAC to offer high power in a reduced footprint, comparable to that of an A4 sheet. It is aimed at setups where available space is limited, without giving up a power section capable of driving demanding speakers.
The amplification section is built around an Ncore module manufactured by Hypex in the Netherlands, known for its energy conversion efficiency. This technology allows the AX-505 to reach 130 W + 130 W into 4 Ω and 90 W + 90 W into 8 Ω, while limiting power consumption and heat output. Total harmonic distortion measures 0.002% and the signal-to-noise ratio reaches 110 dB, two figures that reflect accurate sound reproduction and a low background noise level, particularly suited to listening to high-resolution sources. Frequency response spans 10 Hz to 50 kHz.
The power supply relies on a large-capacity toroidal transformer paired with a Schottky diode (SBD) in the rectifier circuit, a solution that reduces the rectification noise generated by conventional rectifier circuits and provides a more stable supply to the unit's various stages.
The AX-505 also includes a headphone amplifier with a separate ground connection, as well as a balanced XLR input designed for connection with compatible sources, limiting interference during signal transmission. Two VU meters feature on the front panel and can be adjusted across four backlight levels (bright, medium, dim, off), with the option to disable their movement or increase their sensitivity by +20 dB. The all-metal chassis adopts a fanless design for silent operation.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking that the machined aluminium volume knob operates correctly, with a consistent rotational feel, as well as the condition of the screw terminals and their gold-plated contacts. The behaviour of the VU meters and their backlight is also worth testing across the available settings, along with the operation of the headphone amplifier and the balanced XLR input.
