Description
The TEAC CG-10MX is an external master clock generator designed to supply a 10 MHz reference signal to compatible digital devices: DAC, network players, CD or Super Audio CD players, digital transports. Rather than a component of the playback chain itself, it is a companion device that synchronises the internal clock of connected equipment to a stable external reference.
The heart of the unit is an OCXO-type (Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator) quartz oscillator, housed in a thermostated chamber to limit frequency drift caused by temperature. The stated specifications are a temperature stability of ±3 ppb and a frequency accuracy of ±0.1 ppm at the factory output, with a clock stabilisation time of two minutes after power-on. The signal is delivered as a sine wave at a level of 0.5 Vrms, with an output impedance of 50 Ω, via four gold-plated BNC connectors, allowing up to four devices to be fed simultaneously. Power comes from a toroidal transformer, intended to provide the stable current required for the precision of the clock delivered.
This type of device is aimed at users who already own a DAC, network player or CD/SACD player accepting a 10 MHz external clock input, and who wish to explore the benefit of an external frequency reference on their digital setup. It therefore concerns systems already built around a quality digital source, rather than general-purpose use.

What to check before buying used
Check that the clock reliably reaches its two-minute stabilisation time and that the four BNC outputs deliver a constant level of 0.5 Vrms, without any drop on one of them that would indicate a worn connector or solder joint. The critical component remains the thermostated OCXO oscillator: a unit that has undergone prolonged storage in cold conditions or repeated mains interruptions may see its accuracy drift from the original ±0.1 ppm. Also check the toroidal transformer, which is prone to humming after several years of continuous use.
