Description
The TEAC HA-507 is a fully balanced circuit headphone amplifier, built to a dual-mono architecture with four separate amplification stages for the left, right, positive and negative channels. It can also function as a headphone preamplifier, paired with an external amplifier, or as a dedicated power amplifier driven by a high-end preamplifier.
Its balanced output delivers 6,700 mW + 6,700 mW into 32 Ω, a level capable of driving low-sensitivity, high-impedance headphones. When an unbalanced headphone is connected, the internal balanced stages switch to an active ground configuration, which actively brings the signal ground level to zero and widens the reproduced soundstage. Gain is adjustable across three levels (high, medium, low) to match the output to the headphones in use.
The chassis combines a semi-floating 2.8 mm aluminium top panel, simply seated in the notches of the side panels without screws, with a reduced number of fixing screws for the internal circuit board. The Stressless Foot, a metal design unique to TEAC, has a degree of play at its junction with the bottom panel. The top panel grille and internal cooling fins receive a medical-grade damping treatment, intended to reduce frequency peaks. Heat dissipation is achieved without a fan.
This model is aimed at high-end headphone enthusiasts seeking substantial power reserve and comprehensive connectivity, both balanced and unbalanced. What to check before buying used
The motorised volume control potentiometer can develop crackling or balance drift after several years of use: testing across its full range, at both low and high volume, will reveal this. Also check that the semi-floating top panel is properly held in the side notches, and check the play at the Stressless Foot junction, two points prone to wear or previous disassembly. An inspection of the XLR and Pentaconn connectors on insertion, which see frequent use, completes the check.
