Description
The PD-301DAB-X is a mini-format CD player designed by TEAC, which also integrates an FM and DAB/DAB+ tuner. It is designed to be paired with an amplifier of similar scale, such as the AI-303 from the same range, within a compact hi-fi system.
Disc playback covers CD, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW formats, as well as MP3 and WMA files burnt to disc. A USB port complements the unit for playback of digital files in WAV, AAC, MP3 and WMA formats, with support for WAV up to 24-bit/192 kHz, without going through a computer. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a 32-bit Texas Instruments Burr-Brown PCM5142 converter, known for its linearity. The radio tuner allows up to 20 FM presets and 10 DAB/DAB+ presets to be stored, for quickly finding favourite stations.
In terms of measurements, the unit displays a total harmonic distortion of 0.005% at 1 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 113 dB, values that reflect clean reproduction with little perceptible background noise. The RCA output has an impedance of 470 ohms, while the digital coaxial output is 75 ohms. The unit also has a digital optical output. The aluminium chassis and its anti-vibration structure contribute to mechanical stability during playback, and the aluminium controls enhance handling precision.
With a power consumption of around 8 W during playback and automatic standby after 30 minutes of inactivity, this player is suitable for daily use in a living room or office. Its compact format (215 x 61 x 396 mm for 2.1 kg) makes it an easy source to integrate into a small-scale setup, alongside an amplifier or active speaker system.

What to check before buying used
The optical block remains the sensitive point: a lightly used player may struggle to read CD-Rs burnt at low speed or skip on scratched discs, a sign of an ageing laser. Also check the smoothness of the tray on opening and closing, as a stiff or noisy mechanism often indicates worn drive belt. Finally, test FM and DAB/DAB+ reception as well as the USB port before purchase, to rule out any aerial or connection issues.
