Description

The TEAC UD-507 is a headphone amplifier paired with a digital-to-analogue converter, designed to serve as the heart of a high-end headphone listening system. It can also function as an analogue preamplifier in combination with external equipment, thanks to its RCA and XLR inputs.

Its architecture is based on a dual mono configuration, with an in-house discrete-component DAC developed by TEAC (TRDD5 circuit) paired with a proprietary FPGA. The unit offers five digital inputs: two USB-B, two USB-C, a coaxial input, an optical input and Bluetooth with support for LDAC, LHDC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC codecs. A dedicated BNC input for a 10 MHz external master clock allows the unit to be synchronised to an external frequency reference. On the headphone output side, there is an XLR4 connector, a 6.35 mm jack and a 4.4 mm Pentaconn jack, with three gain levels (low, medium, high) to match the power delivered to the impedance of the headphones used, ranging from 16 to 600 Ohms. Power output reaches 1.2 watts at 100 Ohms via the balanced output and 900 mW at 32 Ohms via the unbalanced output, with a frequency response of 5 Hz to 70 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB.

This model is aimed at audiophiles with demanding, current-hungry high-end headphones, as well as those wishing to centralise several digital and analogue sources around a single unit. The presence of an external clock input and multiple USB inputs also makes it a sound choice for a system already equipped with a dedicated digital source or an audiophile computer.

What to check before buying used

The XLR4 connector and the 4.4 mm Pentaconn socket deserve careful checking: these are fragile contact points, prone to loose connections and wear after repeated insertions. Also check that the gain and input selectors hold firmly in place, and that there is no crackling on the volume potentiometers. Finally, test each digital input (USB, coaxial, optical, Bluetooth) to rule out any recognition fault linked to the FPGA or the proprietary DAC circuit.
