Description
The TEAC VRDS-701T is a CD transport, that is to say a player dedicated exclusively to reading the disc and outputting the digital signal, without an onboard digital-to-analogue converter. It is aimed at those who already own an external converter and wish to pair it with a playback source optimised solely for extracting the signal from the CD.
Its VRDS mechanism relies on a rotating aluminium platter of the same diameter as the disc, onto which the CD is fixed to maximise inertial mass and stabilise its rotation. This approach aims to reduce the vibrations generated by rotation itself, correct disc deformation and improve the precision of the optical axis between the read head and the medium, which limits the servo current required and reduces reading errors.
The entire mechanism is mounted in a semi-floating position on a sub-chassis, an arrangement that controls the transmission of vibrations between the mechanism and the main chassis. The motor is isolated from internal vibrations, and the reading mechanism is itself isolated from external vibrations, with the aim of preserving reading precision across the whole spectrum.
The removal of the digital-to-analogue converter allowed the internal circuit to be reorganised around the digital output alone, with larger components than a chassis incorporating a DAC could have accommodated. The VRDS-701T features a coaxial digital output, an optical output, as well as a 10 MHz clock input allowing the unit to be synchronised with an external clock, including an atomic clock via a dedicated 50-ohm connector. This input can also be used to synchronise an entire digital chain with a common clock generator. 12V trigger connectors, input and output, complete the connectivity.
This transport is aimed at a user who already owns a quality external DAC, wishing to separate disc playback from conversion, in keeping with the logic of separation of functions typical of high-end audio. It will particularly suit those who use an external clock or are considering adding one to their system.

What to check before buying used
The VRDS mechanism, with its aluminium platter clamping the disc, should stabilise rotation without friction noise or slowdown at start-up: a drawer that struggles to open or a platter that slips indicates wear on the motor or the loader's drive belt. The optical block deserves a playback test across several discs, including towards the end of the programme, to rule out any loss of focus. The atomic clock connector on the rear panel and the digital outputs (coaxial, optical) should be visually checked for the absence of oxidation or play.
