Description
The Thorens MM 008 is a phono preamplifier designed to sit between a turntable and an amplifier that lacks a dedicated phono input. It applies the RIAA equalisation required for playing vinyl records and amplifies the signal, which is very weak at the cartridge output, up to a level usable by a conventional amplifier.
It is compatible with the two main cartridge families: moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC), each benefiting from a gain suited to its needs.
This preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts equipped with an amplifier lacking a phono input, or wishing to replace an entry-level phono stage with a dedicated unit. What to check before buying used
Check that the RCA input and output connectors, as well as the ground terminal, are properly tightened and free of play, as these are often subject to wear from repeated connections. Test both channels in MM and MC configurations, including swapping the plug-in loads, to rule out any oxidised contacts or internal loose connections. A hum or loss of channel when handling the connectors usually indicates a faulty solder joint or a worn socket.
