Description
The TD 101 A is a fully automatic turntable designed by Thorens, fitted with a belt-drive system. It features a built-in phono preamp, allowing it to be connected directly to a hi-fi system or active speakers without an external preamplification stage. The aluminium tonearm positions and returns to its rest automatically with each use.
The Audio-Technica AT 3600 cartridge comes pre-fitted on the tonearm as standard. It is built around a moving magnet (VM) generator with a conical diamond stylus, offering a frequency response of 20 Hz to 22 kHz, channel separation of 20 dB and channel balance of 2 dB at 1 kHz. The tonearm accepts any other cartridge in the 1/2 inch mount, leaving room to upgrade the turntable in future. The platter, made of die-cast aluminium, weighs 3.5 kg with a diameter of 30.48 cm and a thickness of 22 mm; combined with a rubber platter mat, it helps absorb vibrations. The signal-to-noise ratio is 60 dB, and the turntable sits on anti-vibration absorbing feet.

What to check before buying used
The drive belt is a wear item worth checking: a slack or cracked belt causes audible speed variations. Also check the condition of the stylus and the AT 3600 cartridge, whose tip wears down with hours of use, as well as the correct operation of the automatic tonearm lift and return mechanism. The rubber platter mat should be supple and free of deformation to ensure proper vibration absorption.
