Description
The Thorens TD 1500 is a manual belt-drive turntable, a direct descendant of the suspension principle introduced by the TD 150. The platter and tonearm rest on a sub-chassis decoupled from the motor and main chassis by three conical springs, isolating the cartridge from mechanical and acoustic vibrations transmitted by the support surface.
The adjustment of this suspension has been simplified compared with the historic model: the three springs are now accessible from above, through openings made in the platter, allowing more precise adjustment without disassembly. The DC motor is electronically controlled by an incremental encoder that detects and corrects speed deviations in real time, improving rotational stability. The TP 150 tonearm, with an effective mass of 14 grams, is adjustable in height and azimuth, fitted with a standard SME connector to facilitate cartridge changes, and equipped with a sliding-weight anti-skating system guided on a nylon thread resting on a ruby bearing. A notable feature for its category, the turntable offers XLR outputs in addition to the standard RCA outputs, allowing balanced operation with a suitable MC cartridge.

What to check before buying used
On this suspended model, check the condition and tension of the three conical springs accessible from the top of the platter: an unbalanced adjustment results in a tilting platter or a misaligned tonearm. Also check the drive belt, which is prone to wear or hardening over time, as well as the condition of the supplied Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge, particularly its diamond and internal suspension. The nylon thread of the anti-skating system, guided on a ruby bearing, also warrants a visual check to ensure it is neither slack nor broken.
