Thorens TD 1600

The Thorens TD 1600 combines the brand's aesthetic heritage with contemporary technical solutions. Externally, it echoes the codes of the famous 160 series: wooden plinth, two-part platter covered with a thick rubber mat, and acrylic dust cover. However, its internal construction incorporates several notable developments.

The sub-chassis suspension has been reworked: the conical springs no longer rest on the upper board but are fixed directly to the base of the unit, which stabilises vertical movement. A steel wire also connects the sub-chassis to a metal pin attached to the base, limiting unwanted lateral movement. Motor speed, meanwhile, is regulated by a dedicated control unit.

The tonearm, named TP 160, is a 9-inch J-shaped model designed to high-precision standards; it joins the TP 92 as a second tonearm available on models in the TD 1600/1601 series. Derived from studio-origin developments, it combines an aluminium tube, an SME connector and a knife-edge bearing, a first for Thorens, complemented by magnetic guidance intended to limit any wobble. Antiskating adjustment relies on a spring using a classic method, while tonearm height (VTA) and azimuth are adjustable. The graduated counterweight, made up of two elements, allows fine adjustment of tracking force and enables balancing of heavy cartridges, up to 30 g.

The TP 160's headshell is removable and connects via an SME fitting, making it easy to fit various high-end cartridges. As on the TD 1601, the model also benefits from motorised lift and automatic stop at the end of playback.

In terms of sound, the TD 1600 aims for faithful reproduction thanks to very low background noise and stable, steady platter rotation, highlighting the detail and dynamics inherent to the vinyl format. It is intended for audiophile setups seeking quality listening over the long term.
