Description
The Thorens TD 402 DD is a direct-drive turntable, the first of its kind from the Swiss manufacturer. It combines semi-automatic operation, with start and stop managed by the turntable, and connectivity designed for easy integration into a modern hi-fi system thanks to its built-in, switchable MM phono preamplifier.
The 300 mm die-cast aluminium platter spins at 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with manual speed switching via a front-panel selector. The TP72 tonearm, of carbon construction and straight type, has an effective length of 214.5 mm and an overhang of 19.5 mm, two parameters that determine the alignment of the cartridge on the record. It features magnetic anti-skating and a coil using T.P. Copper cable with a DC resistance of 485 Ω. The Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, fitted as standard on a removable headshell with Bounded Round Shank stylus mounting, handles groove tracking.
This model is aimed at an enthusiast seeking an easy-to-use turntable, free of complex day-to-day adjustments, while retaining the technical qualities of direct drive. The built-in phono preamplifier makes it compatible with systems lacking a dedicated phono input, such as certain active or wireless speakers.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking the condition of the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, in particular the wear of the elliptical diamond and the integrity of the stylus, the most heavily used component. The removable headshell warrants a check of its electrical contacts and its secure fit on the tonearm. It is also worth checking the operation of the semi-automatic start and stop mechanism, as well as the stability of the direct drive at constant speed. The presence and condition of the original rubber mat should also be examined.
