Description
The Thorens TD 404 DD is a direct-drive turntable, supplied without a cartridge so that each user can choose the one suited to their system and budget. It is operated manually, with a front-panel switch for starting rotation and changing speed.
The platter, made of aluminium and rubber, weighs 3.7 kg for a diameter of 12 inches, a mass that favours rotational stability. The turntable offers three speeds: 33 1/3, 45 and 78 revolutions per minute. The Thorens TP160 tonearm rests on a knife-edge bearing, a technology that reduces friction and improves groove tracking; it measures 232.8 mm in length, with a bend angle of 23.6°, an overhang of 17.8 mm and an effective mass of 28 g. Anti-skating operates by spring. Two features ease everyday use: electronic e-Lift, which automatically raises the arm at the end of playback to protect the cartridge and the record, and automatic stop for the turntable.
In terms of connectivity, the TD 404 DD offers both gold-plated RCA outputs and balanced XLR outputs, allowing it to be integrated into hi-fi systems equipped with either unbalanced or balanced connections. A standard external power supply is included; an optional linear power supply, the TPN 124, can be paired with it for a more stable voltage.

What to check before buying used
The knife-edge bearing of the TP160 tonearm requires careful inspection: a blunted edge or misalignment causes skating and premature groove wear. Check the flexibility of the anti-skating spring and that the e-Lift triggers correctly at the end of play. Also examine the rubber-coated platter, which is prone to compression marks or localised hardening, as well as the matt oak finish, which marks easily from the slightest knock.
