The Thorens TD 550 is a high-end turntable derived from the TD 350, retaining the suspended platter principle and belt drive. It stands out for the presence of balanced outputs on XLR connectors, in addition to the usual unbalanced RCA outputs.
The manufacturer states that these XLR outputs require no internal electronic conversion, as the signal from the vinyl is inherently balanced by nature. This design theoretically allows the signal to remain intact right up to the turntable's output, a technical point that sets this model apart from many other turntables equipped with XLR outputs obtained through conversion.
Platter control is managed electronically, allowing near-instant start-up, a feature more commonly associated with modern turntables than with classic suspended-platter designs. The support platform, made of lightweight, rigid carbon, is sized to accommodate a 12-inch tonearm.
Adjustment plays a central role in the design of the TD 550: platter height is set via the suspensions, and the unit's feet are also adjustable. A built-in spirit level allows the levelling of the whole assembly to be checked, an important point for the proper operation of the suspended platter.

On units fitted with the XLR output without internal conversion, it is worth checking the connectors and the continuity of the balanced wiring. Finally, it is worth verifying that the built-in spirit level and adjustable feet still allow the assembly to be levelled precisely.
