Description
The Torus Power AVR Elite 4 CE is an automatic mains voltage regulator intended for audio and video installations. Beyond the simple current filtering provided by standard Torus Power models, this AVR range adds active voltage regulation, which strengthens protection against voltage sags, brownouts and surges.
The operating principle relies on maintaining the output voltage within a stable range, between 115 and 125 volts, for an input voltage varying from 90 to 130 volts. Beyond this window, between 85 and 90 volts on one side and between 130 and 135 volts on the other, regulation remains active but to a reduced extent: the unit continues to protect the system, with a smaller correction margin.
Some Torus Power models offer a balanced input, which adds an extra stage of electrical noise cancellation. Combined with automatic regulation, this balanced input allows the same stable output range, 115 to 125 volts, to be maintained, but for a much wider input voltage, from 170 to 270 volts.
The unit also includes Ethernet connectivity and an RS232 interface, which allow basic remote monitoring, suitable for home installations wishing to monitor the state of the power supply in real time.
This type of regulator is aimed at high-end audio and home cinema installations, particularly sensitive to mains fluctuations, or located in areas where mains quality is unstable. It suits users seeking active protection of their equipment rather than simple passive filtering.
What to check before buying used
The servomotor providing active regulation may show signs of wear after many correction cycles, with noticeable mechanical noise or a less precise response. The output sockets and the mains input connector deserve careful inspection, as does the operation of the Ethernet port and the RS232 interface where the unit is fitted with them. The toroidal transformer, very heavy, requires checking its internal mountings after any transport.
